The patterned tiles I saw in Sant'Elmo seemed less like something deliberately decorated and more as though they had been placed there long ago?in wall corners, beside staircases, along the roadside. They appeared to receive little maintenance and were unlikely ever to be replaced. The patterns themselves seemed symmetrical at first glance, but closer inspection revealed they were not perfectly formed. Bathed in sunlight, they had faded slightly, lending them an air of relaxed charm.
That afternoon, weary from walking, I sat by the roadside eating ice cream. The floral-patterned tiles on the adjacent wall were slightly worn, yet their colour scheme was endearing. Though never quite 'absolutely lovely', they somehow lingered in my mind.
